Joshua - Lessons in the Wilderness. Why I Wrote This Book

The theme of this book had been percolating with me for some time: it is the growing disquiet in regards to the models of leadership the Western church sees as normative, even preferred, that appears to run contrary to what makes a good leader from a biblical perspective.  

Naturally, leadership is vital in any endeavour; we are rudderless without it. And, although the fact of leadership doesn’t need defending, what is imperative is what underpins it, what motivates a person’s leadership – indeed, what leadership can look like in the Christian context.  

The premise of this book is seen in avoiding the deeply grooved road map of business, political and sports leaders being the norm for Christian leadership contrasting a different and better means of leadership development - in the life of Joshua. What made him what he became?

I have tracked his life story and conclude that in Joshua we see a different means of leadership development than that so commonly espoused. I reflect that the hidden and formative years of our lives are vital for our future, and, more so, for the future of those we are privileged to lead.

I have identified the means of Joshua’s development in obscurity, and under the spotlight of public scrutiny, as well as given examples of the successes and failures he faced, and how they can influence our choices for the better. I hope it resonates with your reading of scripture, and in the life and progress of Joshua  -  Moses’ right hand.
